Conceptually I don't want to take the tape drive "offline". I just
want to eject the tape. On some drives the eject command advances to
the next tape in the magazine. Moreover the documentation says it's
supported. So at minimum I've identified a documentation bug (which
IMHO is just as serious). Anyway your workaround seems to have worked.

See, even rpm -qi reports that eject is a supported option!
