NE2000 Probs

I am running RH40 and am trying to add an ISA NE2000 compatible enet card.
I think I have all the network settings right, and I have a kernel
(2.0.25) compiled w/ ne2000 support, but when the kernel boots, I get a
"delaying eth0 initialization" rather than the desired initialization.
I have tried adding lines to the lilo.conf, re-entering the info using the
network config. in X. Also, eth0 strangely comes up as inactive after a
boot. (I set it active when I configure it)
Any ideas??
