I just tried to upgrade, from a clean install of RH4.0 done last week
(+ errata & sendmail 8.8.2-3, ie. no MetroX). I was unable to install
XFree86-3.2-1.i386.rpm using rpm -hivU.
I tried removing all of the XFree packages, but, of course, failed on the
main one (XFree86), which all of the things like emacs-X11.
The big problem appears to be libraries, so I tried to install XFree86-3.2-libs,
but this failed too, until I tried a --force. Now it installed, but the main
package complained of a dependancy problem, it wanted xinitrc... a --nodeps
fixed that, but two errors develop:
cannot remove /usr/X11R6/man/man1 - directory not empty
cannot remove /usr/X11R6/include/X11 - directory not empty
VGA16 installs now, so does devel, SVGA and the 75/100 dpi fonts.
XF86Setup wants libtcl.so and libtk.so, which, of course are installed.
([root@vuser XFree86-3.2]$ rpm -qif /usr/lib/libtcl.so
Name : tcl Distribution: Red Hat Linux Rembrandt)
again, the --nodeps works...
I had less problems installing the unofficial version on another machine
running Rembrandt than the official one on Colgate! I went with RedHat and RPMs
to avoid junk like this! :-(
