I had the same problem, but took the lazy route. I had RPM 2.0.7 but
couldn't upgrade directly to 2.2.8. To solve it, I used the major upgrade
along the way. That is, I upgraded to RPM 2.1, then to 2.2, then to
2.2.7. It turns out that 2.2.8 depended on something else that I didn't
have - so it's at 2.2.7 that I stayed. All the old RPM.rpm's are on the
FTP servers under "code"; for example, on my closest/fastest mirror, the
URL is
ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/linux/redhat/code/rpm/
So the sequence of RPM.rpm's under that directory was:
rpm-2.1.x/rpm-2.1-1.i386.rpm
rpm-2.2.x/rpm-2.2-1.i386.rpm
rpm-2.2.7-1.i386.rpm
I may also have upgraded to the last 2.0.x series before starting the
above sequence, but now I don't remember:
rpm-2.0.x/rpm-2.0.9-1.i386.rpm
Anyways, this was the lazy way out since I didn't have to do any
compiling. All I needed was download and upgrade with the "rpm -Uvh"
command. Good luck.
