We got a new machine which had a bust ide1 controller.
They replaced the motherboard, and the P/S blew a fuse.
Replacved it (with the new MB disconnected) and the P/S blew (smoke etc).
Replacement P/S was DOA. So they took the box away to be fixed.
It came back with a duff block:

Test it using "dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/null bs=1024k conv=noerror" as root to
read all the blocks on the disk.
I suspect you'll get one error per run, always on block 2230676.
I decided that I wouldn't risk trying to get them to fix it, so I re-installed
RH, hoping that the "make new FS and check all blocks" would *fix* any errors.
It didn't :-(
However, I simply re-wrote the duff sector and it's been OK (so far) ....
If you dare risk it, you can:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda2 seek=1150372 bs=512 count=1
and hope it didn't hold anything important ....
