Are you using the "built in Adaptec 1542"  I have several nec image 
486/66 pc's where the internal scsi would not work under linux.  This was 
about 2 years ago, using slackware 1.2.8.  I finallg gave up and 
installed real 1542 cards after disabling the internal version, and 
everything worked fine.
