Under qmail, root does not get mail at all. You need to forward root's
mail to yourself as a user. I have, for example, the following files
in /var/qmail/alias:
.qmail-root
.qmail-postmaster
.qmail-mailer-daemon
In .qmail-root, I put
&matyi@moni.msci.memphis.edu
(matyi is my user name) and in the other two I put
&root
This will result in forwarding the mail sent to postmaster and
mailer-daemon to be sent to root (and then to me).
In fact I also have some other files like
.qmail-system
.qmail-nobody
.qmail-manager
and they all point to root.
You might want to read "man dot-qmail" about the syntax of the qmail
alias files.
Also, it is useful to read the INSTALL.* files in /usr/doc/qmail*
