There is a reason they are different, I do believe. Ask rpm-list for
elaborations.

If you get the .src.rpm, there are README's for most of the modules (which
should have been included in the pam package, probably).

To shadow things:

pwconv5
chmod 000 /etc/passwd- /etc/shadow-
