4.0 problems

OK, I finally opened up that RedHat 4.0 box that's been collecting
dust on my shelf while I waited for a day off to upgrade. For the most
part things went well. But there were still problems, some minor
others, killer.
1. No rescue disk - This was almost a show-stopper. The kernel/modules
that ship with 4.0 or the lilo.conf generated by the upgrade don't
work with my system. I needed to boot a rescue disk so I could run
lilo with my pre-4.0 kernel, but there wasn't one to boot from. I
ended up starting an upgrade again and using the shell VT.
2. kernel/modules/lilo - I install lilo on the MBR of my first ide
drive, my root partition is on my first scsi drive. After the upgrade,
it rebooted and locked up after loading the kernel. If this wasn't an
upgrade I would have been SOL.
3. .rpmsave/.rpmorig - A nitpik, I thought this would be fixed by
now. Some rpms save their config files with .rpmsave others with
.rpmorig.
4. /etc/rc.d/rc?.d/*.rpmsave - This might have been said before, but
this doesn't save anything since these are only links to files in the
init.d directory which don't get .rpmsave files.
5. /etc/sysconfig/static-routes - A sample file here would be nice. It
took a while of wandering through the network scripts to figure out
the expected format of this file. I know, "Use the Control
Panel". Well, that doesn't work for me, I have to hand edit all that.
6. Xconfigurator - core dumps every time I run it right after I
specify my video card (Orchid Kelvin 64).
7. PAM - Its short on documentation. I've read all the files in
/usr/doc/pam* and while it does describe the /etc/pam.conf file very
well, it doesn't describe the modules at all. Without knowing what the
modules do, I don't see how anyone could modify the pam.conf file.
8. Shadow - On a related note, how do I do shadow passwords? Is it
simply to run pwconv5? I'm guessing here since the Shadow-utils
package doesn't include a man page for pwconv5. Are any changes to
/etc/pam.conf required to do shadow?
