After this weekend, I love Linux even more. We've got a heterogenous
menagerie of macs and 95 pcs with an NT server. I grabbed a 486
motherboard, 8 megs of RAM, a 119MB hard drive and an old IBM AT case
from our junk pile and in a few hours got a working Linux box. I'm now
able to let the Win95 machines print to the AppleTalk-only printers, and
the Macs print even faster than before because the Linux box is doing all
the spooling. We bought a product called the microPrint bridge from some
company (micro systems?) and that allows the ethernet-only macs to see
our two LaserWriters. The bridge was around 2 or 3 hundred dollars, but
it has made itself worth the money this weekend alone. I'd still be
interested if anyone knows of PC AppleTalk cards with Linux support, or
drivers for Farallon's PhoneNet cards.
Just my tale of achievement...
