I almost mentioned those in my message...
If you look in /etc/services, you'll see that daytime is a separate
service from time. They are indeed separate. All of the built-in services
in this version of inetd are listed in the inetd.conf that's installed,
except for time. I went looking at the sources to inetd before I was sure
of this...

I believe daytime displays human readable time, whereas time returns the
number of seconds since 1/1/1900 (in a 32 bit integer).
