Netatalk Challenge

And I'm getting tired of being challenged 8-(.
The thickend plot, for those who are interested but are not saving my
deathless prose for later reference 8-). I want to run netatalk so that my
children's Mac can access my laser printer from the Mac. I was told,
initially, that this should be a case of install the latest netatalk rpm,
reboot, and access a user account area from the chooser on the Mac. It has
not worked that way....
Last time I asked here, the atalkd program could not find the ethernet
adapter. I spoke this afternoon with a local Linux inthusiast (thankyou
Robert), and we hypothesized that the NIC might be alergic to Linux. I
went out and got another ne2000 clone this afternoon, and I can say that
it isn't the card. I then tried bringing up the ethernet node, which seems
to allow the netatalk package to work; sort of. I'm no longer getting
error messages under Linux, but I'm also not seeing any volumes to access
under the Chooser! Anybody got any, and I do mean any, ideas? Wild or
otherwise?
Also: I used my IP address in setting up the eth0 device, which appears to
conflict with the ppp link. I thought I had, but am not finding it, the
list of IP addresses reserved for private networks. I figure using a Class
C address will atleast hold the eth0 device up for the atalkd to use,
until I get some IP networking going.
I admit I'm getting a little tired of having this much fun.
