My Linux crashes when running applications on remote host

I just checked my system using "top" when running application on remote host,
where sometimes the system crashes. It gives me roughly:
MEM: 14904k av 14532k used 372k free 14456 shrd 5552k buf
Swap: 34268k av 0k used 34268k free
It seems to me that there is something wrong with the swap area. Why is it
0k used? Could that be the problem?
