I have done lots of installations with Win95 and Linux on the same hard disk
with excellent results. I am careful to configure lilo to use write the boot
sector to the root of the linux partition and not to the master boot record.
If the root partition is on a logical drive in the extended partition it is
necessary to write the boot sector to the extended partition. Include the
dos partition as one of the bootable systems in the lolo.conf file
(automatic with the Red Hat install). Then use fdisk to make the dos
partition inactive and the Linux (or extended) partition active before
rebooting.
It is legal to have lilo write to the master boot record, although it can
cause problems. Hovever, it is necessary to use the master boot record to
boot linux on a second hard disk when there is only a primary dos partition
on the first hard disk.
I usually make the dos partition the default so that non-Linux users of the
PC do not need to know what to type at the boot prompt. They just wait a few
seconds and Windows 95 starts.
The install disk serves as a backup way of starting Linux in case of a
failure in running or configuring Lilo. You should also have emergency boot
disks for Windows 95.
