Qmail's receive component runs from inetd. So, after you install qmail,
you need to take a look at the end of inetd.conf, and note that there's
been an addition there.
Inetd will not reread the inetd.conf file until you do a kill -1 to the
inetd process.
I think you got into trouble because your mailer couldn't open the SMTP
socket on localhost.

You should remove sendmail before installing qmail. Installation of exmh
and other such things should work OK after qmail is installed, as qmail
will put a file with the name 'sendmail' in an appropriate place and make
those other RPMs happy.

Hope I helped a little. I've been running qmail for a little over a week
with exellent results.
NOTE: Install 0.92 of qmail if you do not already have that version. It's
MUCH improved over 0.90 (I didn't try 0.91, and so cannot comment on
that).
