Thanks to Jonas Kvarnstrom for pointing out that a back-quote is
required in
eval `dircolors /etc/DIR_COLORS`
as opposed to
eval 'dircolors /etc/DIR_COLORS'
the former properly sets LS_COLORS according to the specs in
/etc/DIR_COLORS
