Well

Thanks for all the suggestions I have received!

The winner seems to be GD.pm which allows the direct creation of gif's on
the fly using Perl - a language I am quite happy with.

I had some problems when I tried to compile it. It modiefies the installed
perl binary and there is an option to compile a new version (gdperl) which
does not replace your original perl.

I tried this (being a conservative sort of person), but it failed. As I
figured I could always reinstall from CD, I gave up and let it do what it
wanted - and it compiled/installed beautifully - and WORKS!

As an (very small) example of what GD.pm can do, visit my home page (URL
in my .sig) and look at the clocks... I reckon this is a 'must have' for
web pages!

Again, thanks for the suggestions...
