That problem (the empty rectangle) happens for me if I interrupt gs
rendering the image the first time. If you wait until the watch
cursor turns back into the pointer when xdvi starts gs (which happens
when you first change to a page with a ps figure on it), then you
won't get the empty rectangle. Once xdvi has started gs, you can page
forward and back without waiting for it to finish.
