Problems with ppp after connect

Hi all,
I'm using the 3.03 cd version of red-hat linux. PPP connects ok but
it times out sending config requests. I can see the modem rxd light flashing
so I am pretty sure the isp is sending a reply but after about 3 minutes of
trying I time out and hang up. The Zyxel modem works just fine on other systems.
It's something simple isn't it? TIA for any help with this problem.
