Compiling gdperl on Red Hat

Hi
I am trying to make gdperl on Red Hat 4 and I am having trouble...when I
run the make I get

-lgdbm -ldb -ldl -lm -lc
ld: cannot open -lgdbm: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [gdperl] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/GD-1.14'
make: *** [gdperl] Error 2

Now, I do indeed have gdbm-1.7.3-8 (/usr/lib/libgdbm.so.2.0.0) installed.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to overcome this error.
