Problem with new kernel

I have used "make xconfig" to create a kernel for my specific needs and
hardware. If I use"make zdisk," I get a kernal on a floppy that will
boot my system nicely. However, whenever I try "make zlilo" or use the
procedure as described in the user's guide for RH 4.0 (pp. 38-40)
with modifications as on p. 41 for a monolithic kernel, I cannot get
a vmlinuz image in /boot that will actually boot the system. When I
attempt to use the vmlinuz that was created via "make zdisk," etc.,
it starts loading and then reboots the computer. During the various
attempts to get a valid vmlinuz, I get errors and a message
indicating that my root partition, /dev/hdb7, is not on the first
disk. That's fairly obvious and caused no problems in RH 3.0.3.
Anyone have any words of wisdom for this problem?
