Have you upgraded to NetKit-B-0.08-8?
rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.redhat.com/ftp/updates/i386/NetKit-B-0.08-8.i386.rpm

It won't hurt to also upgrade to the latest pam:
rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.redhat.com/ftp/updates/i386/pam-0.50-22.i386.rpm

If that doesn't fix it, please send me a private email message with your
entire /etc/hosts.equiv file, /etc/resolv.conf, and /etc/nsswitch.conf,
and the version of pam you are using.
