I've been told that your short description is correct, although it isn't
working that way for me (my troubles are on the Linux end, btw). Assuming
no Linux glitches, and I'm the only one I've ever heard of having such
fun, the Linux box will appear in the chooser window (under the Apple
Menu). If the Macs are not up and running on an Apple network already, you
will need to turn on networking also. You will find 3-4 items under
Control Pannels (also under the Apple Menu) which you need to look at.
Setting up the Apple talk should be a snap (even I was able to do it with
out the docs, which is good because they were missing in the mess).
The Linux Journal did a short piece on adding a Linux box to a fleet of
Macs perhaps six months ago. Check their website, and you might find some
more details.
In short - go for it!
