There is some security through obscurity not to mention privacy. For example,
the shadow passwords are in a file readable only by root; mail folders are
only readable by their owner (and root of course), etc. Making a partition
readable by the world essentially does an end run around the file specific
permissions. It wouldn't be easy, but it would be doable to get some info.
