RPM Version Number Question

I am trying to add the latest xanim package. Rpm -q xanim gives:
xanim-27063-1
I ran rpm and got the following message:
Retrieving
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/contrib/RPMS/xanim-2.70.6.3-2.i386.rpm
xanim package xanim-27063-1 (which is newer) is
already installed
Is this true and if so, why. Thanks.
