Power failure, ZIP drive, fsck and modules.

Hi,
Yesterday evening when I was playing xgalaga
(reached 15th level with 3 spare ships!) a lightning
struck and there was a power failure. The my computer
rebooted, as usual after such ocassions dropped me
to (repair filesystems#) prompt, I ran fsck then rebooted,
repaired all partitions except /dev/sda4 (my ZIP drive)
Booting went through 5 ext2 partitions without errors
but as soon as it reached /dev/sda4 (compiled as a module),
it dropped me to that (repair filesystem#) prompt again. I
tried to run fsck but, as in the previous attempt, it said
"superblock is corrupt". I used fsck with different options
without any positive results. Very frustrated, I went 'init 1'
and 'vi /etc/fstab' and took marked out /dev/sda4. Booted
again, tried to mount /dev/sda4, tried to fsck it or
repartition it or reformat it, simply says "it's not a block
device" and complains something about "insmodes" and so on.
I rebooted the system with monolitic kernel (no modules) after I
added /dev/sda4 back to /etc/fstab and had no problems
accessing the drive whatsoever. As soon as I booted with
modular kernel, it just couldn't automatically load ppa module
(I discovered it later) but works fine if I do 'insmode ppa'.
So now the question: what has changed since the moment before
the power failure and the moment after it that kerneld doesn't
load ppa module automatically on startup anymore and I get that (repair
filesystem#) prompt? I know that filesystem is perfectly fine,
I don't want it to lie to me.
