I had been using generic 3-buttons without any problems.

I use `gpm -t msc` on the text console
and for XF86config:

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol    "MouseSystems"
    Device      "/dev/mouse"
EndSection

and make sure your mouse button switch is set at 3-buttons mode.

If you don't have a switch on the mouse, you have to Microsoft Mouse 
instead.
