I do not trust tar to keep all file stats intact..

the way we do it at my place is: (making sure the users have permission 
to write to st0)

on NON-TAPE machine:

dump 0uf - / | (rsh freakshow dd of=/dev/st0)


where freakshow is the machine with a tape drive.
I think that is teh command line..and it works very well..!
