Thanks for everyone's thoughts. The problem wound up being my incorrectly
configuring htdig - nothing to do at all with redhat.
For those who are curious (or perhaps had the same problem), the default
htdig.conf file includes fuzzy searching. This is great - but if you don't
create the fuzzy search databases htsearch will bomb.
