Applix mail makes a new file  and/or directory for each message.  Perhaps you
have too many mail messages.

Personally, I use pine.  I tried applix mail and it screwed everything up, as
well as being quite slow.  One has to futz with the mouse all the time to 
look at and save the next message.  Pine is much quicker.  One doesn't have
to take their hands off the keyboard.  I also prever vi though.
