I have never touched this stuff; the error appeared after upgrading
rpm to the one in the updates directory.
$ less /usr/lib/rpmrc |grep cpio
cpiobin: /bin/cpio
$ l /bin/cpio
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 292160 Aug 27 09:17 /bin/cpio*
