I've read with interest the glowing endorsements of qmail in this list,
and having thrashed in ignorance against sendmail since 1984, decided to
try it. Following the instructions in the INSTALL file, I came across
this passage in the file INSTALL.ctl:
-------
There's one big exception. You MUST tell qmail your hostname. The easy
way to do this is to run the qmail-makectl script:
# ./qmail-makectl
qmail-makectl finds your fully-qualified hostname in DNS and puts it
into control/me. It also selects good defaults for a few other controls.
-------
This is a problem for me. My home machine has no local net (I've got a
3com card pending purchase of a second box), and my fully-qualified
hostname is assigned dynamically by my ISP. In other words, my hostname
varies with each PPP connection.
Does anybody have any suggestions for qmail configuration in this environment?
[ additional info that may or may not be useful:
I currently have a custom `ppp-on' script that initiates the PPP connection,
and after it has been established uses the resolver to determine my new
FQDN, which I set dynamically into the system via the sethostname(2) syscall.
Once `pppd' terminates, the script resets the hostname to an unqualified
name ("sludge").
The `ppp-on' script also sets /etc/resolv.conf to be a symbolic link
to a file appropriate to my ISP _before_ starting the PPP link, and
resets it to be a symlink to an "empty" resolv.conf file on pppd
termination.
