Well, to patch you can just do 'gzip -dc patch-2.xx.gz | patch -p0 -s' 
and you'll be fine.  The only problem is it will screw up your rpm 
database, and I guess that was what I was concerned with..

I think having to endure problems when I could fix them very quickly had 
I had the proper rpm makes me think of trashing the database and the 
'pristine' state :(
