Hah - got it.
Stupid - didn't have initrd support in the kernel, just ram disk. Once
that was in place, it was a bit of trial and error, but now the system
works. It uses a small 5 meg partition to hold /boot and selections
from /etc and /dev. The initrd just loads and starts the MD drivers,
then the raid0 combined partition is loaded as the root.
One hiccup was that lilo doesn't like /dev/md0 or /dev/md1 as a root=
entry. I used rdev to set the root in the kernel file, then deleted the
root= line from lilo.conf. Works like a champ ...
