Just ran into this one myself but on my hp-ux workstation. Ical on my
linux box at hoem works
fine. The linux version was a precompiled binary while the hp version
had to be compiled. I think the configure script is confused about the
home directory and is starting in a directory were you don't 
have write permission.  Using the -calendar option (ical -calendar
~/.calendar) fixes it for me.
Now if I could just get it to recognize its X resources I'd be all set.
