Recently Brian Huntlry shared this with us:
I am doing a fresh install of RH 4.0 and can not install the boot loader.
I have tried all the options (MBR, first sector of root, and floppy) and
get fatal errors on all of them. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for your help!

And earlier this week Ken Klein e-mailed to support@redhat.com:
I just starting trying to install 4.0 from the CD last Friday. I have
installed
3.0.3 on this machine from the CD, but I started a fresh install with 4.0.
I booted from the boot floppy and all goes fine, thru selecting the packeages
I want and configuring stuff, right down to entering the root password, which
seems to work. And then selecting the hda5 partition to put the boot record
on. I have 3 primary partions for Boot Manager, os/2, and dos/win. After
that I have a logical partition for linux swap, linux, and some left over
for maybe dos junk. I try to select hda5 for the partition to write the boot
record to, but it comes back and tells me there was some error and I can go
the menu or retry the operation or give up. I tried several times to write
to hda5 or to a floppy, I dont (didn't) want to write over boot manager or
the MBR. That is waht apparently happens, because when I boot again, I go
straight to LILO and linux, and then the *installation* dialog starts all
over again. Then I have to reinstall bootmanager to get to os/2 or dos. I
have tried this a couple times with the same result. Is there no way to use
bootmanager and other os's ??????? Do I need to repartition some other
way???? Will I be forced to use LILO???? Does the linux partition have to
be a primary partition. I have AMI Bios from this year or last, so I don't
think the 1.2 Gig drive is causing a >512 cylinders problem. Thanks for
your help.
