I had a similar problem. I wasn't Base though where the installation 
crashed. Most often those were Tetex packages, but there were no 
regularity. I came to the conclusion that there are some problems with 
memory management during installation: in my crashes disappeared as 
soon as I enabled  a 20MB Linux swap partition (I repartitioned it 
later in order to share swap with Windows).  This is despite the fact 
that my computer has got 20MB of RAM.
So, my advice is to increase  the size of your swap. 
If it works, I'm waiting for your first milliard.
