Well.. far be it from me to suggest hacking /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow 
directly, but.. have you tried hacking /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow directly? :)

   [18:51:50] weasel:warwick $ perl -le 'print crypt("anon","22")'
   22yH9c0sqctYE
   [18:51:56] weasel:warwick $

Just bung that `22yH9c0sqctYE' rubbish into the encrypted password field.
