Best way for _me_ to upgrade to 4.0? (I know FAQ!)

Greetings,
I am running RH 3.0.3 with the original 2.0.0 kernel upgrades plus errata.
I never did the Rembrandt thing, but have modified my system quite a bit, so
when I saw Colgate come out, I was a little bit nervous about upgrading.
Anyway, I got some of the Colgate RPM's, like the kernel source and all
security updates, then got kernel patches from Sunsite up to 2.0.24 and
recompiled to that level. I am using a monolithic kernel with no modules.
I am using the latest version of RPM as well, installing most stuff with the
--nodeps switch.
I'm not sure I want to get involved with a module-ized kernel, nor do I want
to tackle PAM, this being a standalone system, _but_ I want to keep up to
date so as to be able to use update RPM's without (much) fear.
SO, does anyone have any recommendations on how to upgrade to 4.0, or at
least get to a point where I can use the 4.0 update RPM's and not put my
current configuration too much at risk? I am especially concerned about new
versions of what I would call base or core packages like SysVinit and
Linux-Utils and their compatibility with my current setup. I am not able to
do a NFS or FTP update, and do not have too much spare disk space.
I hope that I might just be able to download sets of RPM's from what I would
call core packages out to applications, and update a set at a time, then
deleting the installed RPM's. I certainly don't mind buying the 4.0 CD so
as to have all those nice new RPM's available, but I am leery of doing a
full blown 4.0 install/upgrade from the CD.
Thanks in advance for your consideration, and I will understand if people
end up tearing their hair out and telling me to simply bite the bullet and
upgrade and fix the damage afterwards!!
