Compiling kernel w/o modules

I think this is a common question. What is the procedure
for compiling the kernel in redhat which uses no modules.
I had it compiled once but on bootup it complained about
wrong version for some symbols (or something like that).

I did follow the instructions in the redhat manual but
evidently there is some other config file to change so
no modules are loaded?
