I indeed had a pap-secrets file set-up. Actually someone contacted me by
e-mail and suggested that I use seyon instead of minicom, connect manually
type "ppp" (don't leave seyon)
and then type "pppd /dev/modem 38400 defaultroute modem
crtscts"; and this WORKED! Afer a I type this the junk stops on the seyon
screen and I have an up & running PPP connection now;
ifconfig gives the right info, telnet and ftp work etc.

I thought people may be interested in this, also I am interested why it
won't work the way it was suggesed in the HOWTO since I still want to
automate the connection if possible.

Any debugging suggestions?

I don't know much about this stuff, so feel free to assume I am doing
something really stupid, but I tried to follow the HOWTO as closely as I
could.
