By diligent tracing of log files etc., I finally figured out that the
default RedHat configured kernel looks for the Java executable in
directory /usr/bin/java/bin instead of /usr/local/java/bin as the Java
how-to and 2.0 Readmes would lead you to believe. I simply set a
symlink in my /usr/bin directory pointing to /usr/local/java and lo
and behold, it works!

Well, sort of, anyhow, since most of the Java I have is applets and they
only work in Netscape and Netscape is currently sorta broken when it comes
to Java :-(.
