It sounds as if you have a problem with your /etc/resolv.conf file. Perhaps
you should the permissions of this file with ls -l command. If the file does
not have permissions for users to access it, then users may not be able to
access hosts via ftp/telnet using a domain name like porky.redhat.com, but
if I use the an ip address to access hosts. If this is your problem then, just
change the file permissions such that users may read this file.
