Same problem, I'm also using gpm -R. Found a workaround though - you can
use the keyboard arrow keys while you hold down the middle button. Once
the arrow's over the item you want, release the middle button.

One of the few good things about the Commiedire Ameagre was the Amiga-arrow
keys moving the mouse pointer around, as a secondary pointer control. Is it
possible to configure that into MetroX/XFree?
