I still use Pine for reading mail, but I've started using fetchmail as my
pop client as that hands the mail directly to sendmail rather than
downloading to a spool.  This makes procmail easier to use.

What features are you looking for?  I use slrn for news.  It's not an X
program, but it runs very nicely in an rxvt.  I run it with the command:

rxvt +sb -T slrn -bg white -fn 10x20 -geometry 80x30 -e slrn -C
