First of all, you don't want to use lyx-0.10.0-2.i386.rpm from the RedHat
contrib packages. This is an old version with a lot of bugs fixed by
now. The latest version is lyx-0.10.0-7. Unfortunately the newer versions are not
available in rpm format (yet?). But Lyx is improving rather rapidly,
so I would not wait for the rpm distribution anyways.
All latest information and the source files are available at
http://www-pu.informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/users/ettrich/ .
Good documentation makes it very easy to compile even for a novice
- in fact Lyx was the first binary wich I compiled myself, aside from the kernel.
What you need to install before you compile Lyx is the
bxform-0.81-1.i386.rpm package that can be found among contrib
packages on the RedHat ftp site (or go straight to
http://www.redhat.com/linux-info/pkglist/details.cgi?pkg=bxform-0.81-1.i386§ion=contrib ).
