You have the same setup I use at home, so I know it can work...

The 'DEVICE=lp|deskjet|Postscript' line looks suspect to me. Try making
(by editting /var/spool/lpd/lp/filter by hand) that line read 
"DEVICE=deskjet". 
However, for a dj540 you might like trying the dj500 and cdj500 drivers.
The cdj500 assumes you have the color cartridge installed in the printer.

In the printtool configuration, check that the spool name is "lp".

What was happening I believe is that ghostscript was getting passed
the parameter "sDEVICE=lp|deskjet|PostScript", which is invalid.

Let me know if there are any more problems...
