Hello,

I am a newbie to Linux and Unix, but I am developing a great respect for
the OS...what a piece of history!

I have installed the RH 4.0 package on my Toshiba Tecra 700CT. The
system appears to work--I boot with system commander having reserved
500M of HD space for Linux, and about the same for Win95. During the
boot, the system seems to detect everything EXCEPT a PCI device that I
cannot ID. It simply says to look at a particular file....which goes by
too fast to read, to find more info. I would think this is probably the
sound card.

I began by trying to configure MetroX for my system. Here I ran into
problems. The Tecra uses a Chips and Technologies display adapter, but
the Docs do not give the model number. There are a number of CandT
adapters listed in the ConfigX screen (which comes up normally when I do
a /usr/bin/X11/configX) and since the Tecra is capable of doing 16M
colors with external monitor attached, I picked the display adapter that
could drive that. I don't, however, know what MONITOR setting to pick.
There is nothing close to my laptop TFT screen...the closest thing is
the generic 800X600 @60Hz, which does not seem to work. When I pick
these settings, and startx, the screen goes crazy, then fades from
multicolor to black, and I cant do anything except Ctl-Alt-Bkspc to get
out of MetroX.

In the Xerror file, the term "cant find drawing engine" or some such
thing is noted.

Has anyone set up RH 4.0 on a Tecra? Anyone know the proper settings
for configX to get MetroX to run on this beast? An interesting side
bar...if I hit the power switch and shut down the computer after metrox
has blanked the screen...and then power back on....The MetroX windows
show up!...Welcome to Redhat Linux etc, but some are clipped, and the
mouse does nothing.....computer is frozen....however, the buttons along
the bottom are clear, and when the screen comes back on, the REDHAT logo
screen is seen, and then goes away as if the server is running.

Sorry to go on and on, but I'd like to be clear....I am growing to love
the OS despite the problems, the more I learn about it. Any help would
be VASTLY appreciated.

Mark
