Maybe you don't have a permission to run PPP daemon?
Try:

chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd

Try this:

cat someaudiofile.au > /dev/audio

If it doesn't work, try 'cat /dev/sndstat' and see what
it gives you. As a last resort, recompile your kernel
and make sure you enable /dev/audio and /dev/sndstat
support.
