You should do:

startx -- -bpp 16. That's a very FAQ, by the way.
You should also have a proper entry in your
/etc/XF86Config. I noticed that the following 
manuals provide me with a pleasure of reading
when I have nothing to do:           :)

man X
man startx
man XFree86
